On the Herdade dos Lagos graze about 1000 Merino sheep .

Sheep were traditionally part of the Herdade and even though the great, clay plastered sheepfold has now given way to the wine store, sheep are an indispensable part of the overall picture.
The shepherd, his wife and their herding dogs live on the farm and take care of the many lambs that are born each year.

The sheep are a valuable part of the sustainable management of the Herdade dos Lagos. They graze in the various cultivated areas, thus ensuring a natural fertilization, aeration of the soil and weed control, which does not have to be made by machine. In addition, the sheep manure of the sheep is collected and composted. The compost is again used for soil improvement.
